A Day Trip from Bozeman

Yellowstone is Just 80 Miles Away

Bozeman sits at one of the most enviable positions in the American West - less than 90 minutes from the North Entrance of Yellowstone National Park. The world's first national park, established in 1872, protects over 2.2 million acres of geothermal wonders, dramatic canyons, pristine rivers, and the most abundant wildlife in the lower 48 states.

Whether you're planning a full-day self-drive tour, a guided wildlife safari into the Lamar Valley, or a multi-day adventure covering the entire park, Bozeman is the perfect base. The drive south through Paradise Valley along the Yellowstone River is itself one of the most scenic routes in Montana.

From the geothermal spectacle of Old Faithful and the Grand Prismatic Spring to the wildlife-rich Lamar Valley - often called the "American Serengeti" - Yellowstone delivers experiences found nowhere else on the planet.

Don't Miss

Must-See Yellowstone Attractions

From erupting geysers to dramatic canyons, these are the highlights every Yellowstone visitor should experience.

Geyser

Old Faithful

01
Upper Geyser Basin
~90 miles from Bozeman

The world's most famous geyser erupts approximately every 60-110 minutes, shooting boiling water up to 185 feet in the air. Arrive 30 minutes early to secure a good viewing spot on the boardwalk. The Old Faithful Visitor Education Center nearby explains the science behind the geothermal activity.

Hot Spring

Grand Prismatic Spring

02
Midway Geyser Basin
~95 miles from Bozeman

The largest hot spring in the United States and the third largest in the world. Its stunning rainbow of colors - from deep blue at the center to vivid orange and yellow at the edges - is caused by heat-loving bacteria. The overlook trail provides the best aerial perspective of this iconic feature.

Wildlife Viewing

Lamar Valley

03
Northeast Yellowstone
~120 miles from Bozeman

Known as the 'American Serengeti,' Lamar Valley offers the best wildlife viewing in North America. Bison herds, wolves, grizzly bears, elk, and pronghorn are all regularly spotted here. Dawn and dusk are prime viewing times. Bring binoculars or a spotting scope for the best experience.

Canyon

Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

04
Canyon Village Area
~100 miles from Bozeman

A dramatic 24-mile canyon with walls of vivid yellow, orange, and red rock carved by the Yellowstone River. The Upper and Lower Falls are spectacular - the Lower Falls drops 308 feet, nearly twice the height of Niagara Falls. Multiple viewpoints line both the North and South Rims.

Thermal Terraces

Mammoth Hot Springs

05
North Yellowstone
~80 miles from Bozeman

A stunning collection of terraced hot spring formations built from travertine limestone. The terraces are constantly changing as hot water deposits new mineral formations. Mammoth is also home to a large elk herd that frequently wanders through the historic Fort Yellowstone area.

Geyser Basin

Norris Geyser Basin

06
Central Yellowstone
~90 miles from Bozeman

The hottest and most dynamic thermal area in Yellowstone. Home to Steamboat Geyser - the world's tallest active geyser, which can erupt over 300 feet high. The Back Basin and Porcelain Basin loops offer a fascinating walk through an otherworldly landscape of geysers, fumaroles, and hot springs.

Before You Go

Essential Yellowstone Visiting Tips

01

Book Timed Entry Permits Early

Yellowstone now requires timed entry reservations during peak season (late May through early September). Book your entry permit as soon as they become available - they sell out weeks in advance at recreation.gov.

02

Start With the North Entrance from Bozeman

From Bozeman, the North Entrance at Gardiner is just 80 miles away - the closest and most accessible entry point. This route takes you directly through the Mammoth Hot Springs area and into the Lamar Valley for wildlife watching.

03

Arrive at Dawn for Wildlife

Wildlife is most active at dawn and dusk. Plan to be in Lamar Valley or Hayden Valley by sunrise for the best chance of seeing wolves, bears, and large bison herds. Many tour operators offer early-morning departures for exactly this reason.

04

Stay Safe Around Wildlife

Always stay at least 100 yards from wolves and bears, and 25 yards from all other wildlife. Never feed animals. Bison cause more injuries than any other animal in the park - they are deceptively fast and unpredictable despite appearing calm.

05

Allow at Least 2-3 Days

Yellowstone is massive - over 2.2 million acres. A single day trip from Bozeman gives you a taste, but 2-3 days allows you to see multiple regions of the park without rushing. Consider staying one night in the park or nearby Gardiner.

06

Pack Layers and Rain Gear

Yellowstone weather is famously unpredictable. Summer afternoons can bring thunderstorms, and temperatures at elevation can drop significantly. Bring layers, a waterproof jacket, and sunscreen regardless of the forecast.

Timing Your Visit

Best Times to Visit Yellowstone

Spring

Wildlife Season

Apr - May

Baby bison and elk are born in spring, making wildlife viewing spectacular. Snow may still cover higher elevations and some roads may be closed. Crowds are minimal compared to summer.

Summer

Peak Season

Jun - Aug

All roads and facilities are open. Wildflowers are in bloom and all activities are available. Expect large crowds at popular attractions - arrive early and book everything in advance.

Fall

Best Overall

Sep - Oct

Elk rut in September creates dramatic wildlife displays. Crowds thin out after Labor Day, temperatures are comfortable, and fall colors add to the scenery. The ideal time to visit.

Winter

Magical & Quiet

Nov - Mar

Most roads close to private vehicles, but snowcoach and snowmobile tours run to Old Faithful and the interior. Wildlife is easier to spot against the snow, and the thermal features steam dramatically in cold air.

Plan Your Route

Self-Drive Yellowstone from Bozeman

The most popular self-drive route from Bozeman follows US-89 south through Paradise Valley to the North Entrance at Gardiner. This scenic drive along the Yellowstone River takes about 1.5 hours and deposits you directly at Mammoth Hot Springs.

From Mammoth, the classic Grand Loop Road connects all major park areas. For a single-day trip, the northern loop covers Mammoth, the Tower-Roosevelt area, and the Lamar Valley - the best wildlife corridor in the park. Plan to be in Lamar Valley at dawn for the best wildlife viewing.

For a longer day or overnight trip, the southern loop adds Old Faithful, the Grand Prismatic Spring, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The full Grand Loop is 142 miles and takes 4-5 hours of driving without stops.

Key Distances from Bozeman

North Entrance (Gardiner)~80 miles / 1.5 hrs
West Entrance (West Yellowstone)~90 miles / 1.5 hrs
Old Faithful~130 miles / 2.5 hrs

Entry Fees (2026)

  • Private vehicle (7-day pass)$35
  • Motorcycle (7-day pass)$30
  • Individual / Bicycle$20
